Sprint will take part in World IPv6 day

Sprint (NYSE: S) has decided to join other technology companies in the Internet Society's World IPv6 day as a way to increase awareness and accelerate IPv6 deployment.

Similar to other participants, Sprint's websites, including www.sprint.com and its business customer support sites, will be IPv6-compatible during the event.

Seeing that moving to IPv6 is an evolutionary process for businesses and service providers, Sprint is offering IPv6 services on its network in a native dual-stack fashion that supports both IPv4 and IPv6.

Having developed IPv6-based solutions since 1997 and carrying the service on its Peerless IP network since 2007, Sprint is not a stranger to IPv6.

Beginning last June, the service provider began deploying IPv6 SprintLink Dedicated Internet Access for large businesses and wholesale partners that leverage its domestic and international Internet backbone last June. Later this year, Sprint will add IPv6 support on its Global MPLS Layer 3 VPN network followed by enabling IPv6 on its wireless network in 2012.

Iyad Tarazi, vice president of network development and engineering, Sprint, believes that the early adopters of IPv6 will be "high-growth industries that heavily consume Internet addresses, including businesses that partner internationally and the federal government, which has a mandate to deploy IPv6 in 2012," adding that ongoing "growth in machine-to-machine (M2M)" will also benefit from its IPv6 deployments.
