Start-up Zayo Bandwidth chases fiber buys

Tools

Who: Zayo Bandwidth
History: This Louisville, Colo., company was founded by former executives of star-crossed ICG Communications and Level 3 Communications. They recently raised $225 million in funding and have been busy buying other firms with fiber properties.
Why you should care: This new firm wasn't on anyone's radar until recently, but it already has acquired small carriers Memphis Networx and PPL Telcom, is in the process of acquiring CLEC Onvoy Communications, and just this week announced it is acquiring Indiana Fiber Works. With a buying spree like that, Zayo is looking like a mini-Level 3 Communications (which already bought several larger fiber wholesalers and CLECs).
