SureWest offers home monitoring service

Independent telco SureWest Communications has begun marketing a remote home monitoring service as part of its triple play services bundle in its Sacramento, Calif., and Kansas City, Mo. markets. The telco is working with partner Xandoo to provide the Web based service, which connect an IP camera, sensors and a wireless gateway over its broadband connection to offer residents home security while they are away.

Qwest Communications reportedly has been considering offering new home security applications as a way to further battle landline decline and add value to broadband connections. SureWest also isn't the first to actually offer home monitoring. At least a couple of other telcos offer similar services, and it may have been Ameritech (remember Ameritech?) who way back in the 1990s first stepped into the home security business.
