SureWest sells wireless unit to Verizon

Tools

Independent telco SureWest Communications, the Roseville, Calif., company that made its name by pioneering fiber-based broadband bundles, is selling most of its struggling wireless business to Verizon Wireless for $69 million. The deal includes operating licenses and network equipment, though curiously, not several cell towers owned by SureWest in the area around Sacramento.

While SureWest is exiting one business, it has recently committed to expanding its core fiber-based broadband business. It recently moved to buy Everest Broadband, and that deal may not be its last in the wireline broadband arena.

Those towers are worth a lot of money. Great monthly recurring revenue and the real estate and permits etc. make new ones a rare item in that area.
