Synergy: Cisco retains lead in public cloud, while HP dominates private cloud market

Cisco and HP continue to be the vendors to beat in the cloud infrastructure market, accounting for 27 percent of worldwide revenues, says a new Synergy Research report.

However, there are differences between these two vendors in terms of cloud deployment types. Cisco has taken the lead in the public cloud infrastructure segment while HP leads in private cloud.

Synergy said that both vendors saw their share of the total cloud market decline slightly from the previous quarter as their "sequential revenue growth did not quite match overall market growth."

Cisco and HP remain the top two leaders.

However, the more dramatic shifts in market position came further down the ranking with IBM's sale of its x86 server product line to Lenovo saw it drop to fifth place to trail both Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Dell. Lenovo has taken the seventh spot in the vendor ranking.

From an overall revenue standpoint, total fourth-quarter cloud infrastructure equipment revenue, including hardware and software, tallied $13 billion, up 9 percent year-over-year.

"We are seeing strong growth across private, public and hybrid cloud deployments and across all geographic regions," said Jeremy Duke, Synergy Research Group's founder and chief analyst, in a release. "While it remains relatively small, by far the highest growth is being seen in hybrid cloud and I expect this to continue over the next five years."
