AT&T finds cause of equipment fire

AT&T reported that the explosion and subsequent fire that destroyed a broadband access device last year in the Houston area was not caused by a design snafu, but in fact was an isolated incident related to a battery glitch that occurred during manufacturing.

The carrier has been investigating the incident since it happened, and within the last month said its inquiries were focusing on the batteries in the device. There are reportedly 17,000 such batteries in AT&T's network, but the carrier said the glitch apparently only affected the two batteries in the doomed piece of access gear.
