Taipei City leverages sewers as FTTH network route

Taipei's city government is set on bringing its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) to 80 percent of the city's homes by 2015, and to reach that goal it is going to leverage the city's sewers as a way to connect the service to consumers.

Over the course of the next four years, the city in conjunction with Tai Tung Communications and four other contractors will install 3,000 km of fiber throughout the city.

Hau Lung-bin, Taipei City's Mayor, said the contractor's use of the sewerage pipelines will enable it to complete the project on time.

Set to be built out in four stages, the city plans to invest NT$40 billion (USD1.3 billion) over the next 25 years to construct and operate the FTTH service.

The government mandated that the contractor will have to offer services at a rate 10 percent lower than what incumbent Chunghwa Telecom currently charges. Other users like the aborigines, physically disabled users and low-income households will be eligible for a 50 percent discounted rate.
