TalkTalk gives customers 40 Mbps download boost

UK-based competitive provider TalkTalk is giving its current customers the ability upgrade their download speeds to up to 40 Mbps using BT's (NYSE: BT) Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) network.

Beginning in January, TalkTalk customers will be able to take advantage of its "Fibre Optic Broadband," an add-on booster package that will enable its customers to access the higher speed connections for an additional monthly fee.

Given the distance limitations of copper-based VDSL2, TalkTalk revealed that customers would be able to get a guaranteed 15 Mbps speeds. At this point, TalkTalk has not revealed the monthly charges or the setup fee or uplink speeds.

News of TalkTalk's 40 Mbps upgrade path shouldn't be all that surprising. In October, TalkTalk became one of the first competitive service providers to sign up for BT's wholesale Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) product to deliver its own 40 Mbps broadband service.
