TDS brings 1 Gig service to Waunakee, Wis., continues fiber network expansion

TDS Telecom is extending its 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home and accompanying IPTV-based TDS TV service to Waunakee, Wis., the latest in several markets where it is going to offer its fiber-based residential services.

This latest expansion of TDS TV will complement the rollout it has made in some of Waunakee's neighborhoods.

With construction of the fiber network having begun earlier this summer, TDS expects the project to be completed by the middle of September. TDS is retiring existing copper infrastructure and replacing it with fiber, while adding new fiber to neighborhoods that don't have either service.

Customers who reside in the Waunakee expansion area will be able to get the 1 Gbps Internet speeds and TDS TV by the end of September.

Waunakee customers in the expansion area can expect access to higher internet speeds and TDS TV by the end of September.

Julie Maiers, director of marketing at TDS, said in a release that besides offering higher Internet access speeds and an alternative video service choice, the telco's Fiberville program will offer customers "the opportunity for exclusive discounts."

Similar to Google Fiber's (NASDAQ: GOOG) Fiberhood, TDS' Fiberville concept rewards residents and neighborhoods with special offers and discounts once 15 percent of the neighborhood pre-registers for TDS TV service. When a neighborhood achieves "Fiberville" status, each pre-registered household receives free HD for life.

The buildout in Wanakee is part of a broader strategy the telco will take to bring 1 Gbps and IPTV to additional markets in 2015.

During the second quarter 2015 earnings call, the service provider said that it expects to launch an additional seven markets in the remainder of 2015. To date, TDS has rolled out FTTH and TDS TV in 20 markets, enabling 147,000 service addresses, or roughly 20 percent of its total wireline footprint.
