TDS' broadband stimulus project in Port Byron, N.Y., to serve 250 homes

TDS Telecom (NYSE: TDS) has completed its second American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus-funded broadband project that will serve nearly 250 households in Port Byron, N.Y.

Similar to other projects it has completed this year, the build out in Port Byron brought DSL-based broadband service to an area that it said did not have Internet access before.

In the process of extending service to this area, the telco installed over seven miles of fiber cabling and three Remote Terminal (RT) cabinets that will house necessary Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC) equipment that TDS' Port Byron Telephone Co. subsidiary will use to provide services.

The project in Port Byron is the fourth ARRA broadband stimulus project to provide services to customers, and it is the second to be 100 percent complete.

Outside of New York, TDS completed its broadband stimulus project near Orhcard Farm, Mo., while it expects its projects around Chatham, Mich., and Wind Lake, Wis., to be completed by the end of the year. It has also begun broadband stimulus projects in Arizona, Kentucky and Mississippi.

While TDS can provide over 95 percent of the customers in its various territories DSL service, gaining access to federal broadband stimulus funds is enabling it to deliver services to over 20,000 customers that it couldn't economically justify building out service to before.
