TDS serves up more 1 Gig in Georgia, Tennessee communities

TDS Telecom is serving up a new plate of 1 Gbps fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in Farragut and Halls, Tenn., and St. Marys, Ga., three of the  latest communities to get the service this year.

These latest deployments of 1 Gbps service follow recent launches of the service in Mt. Juliet and La Vergne, Tenn., two markets where the service provider had already been providing FTTH service and IPTV.

Like the other markets where it delivers FTTH, eligible customers in Farragut and Halls, Tenn., and St. Marys, Ga., can purchase the 1 Gbps speed tier as part of a TDS TV bundle. The bundle includes a Connected-Home DVR (which links all TVs together), over 260 all-digital channels (including 100+ in HD), on-demand TV and movies, pay-per-view, and on-the-go viewing options.

An additional bonus of the 1 Gig bundles is that customers will get remote PC support, which  includes unlimited technical support along with device set-up assistance, computer cleanup, PC optimization and advanced Internet troubleshooting for free.

Despite all of the attention that Google Fiber and large telcos like AT&T have gained for their 1 Gbps plans, what's notable about TDS Telecom's approach is that it has been focusing its attention on bringing the 1 Gbps service to smaller towns and cities where broadband options are often limited to slower speed DSL and some cable.

Outside of these latest markets, the service provider has been extending the service into its home state of Wisconsin, including a recent launch in Monroe, and into seven Hew Hampshire towns.

While TDS does not break out how many customers have signed up for its 1 Gbps service, the service provider reported in the third quarter of 2014 that it added 1,100 broadband subscribers and 2,500 IPTV subscribers, ending the period with a total of 231,700 and 20,700 subscribers, respectively. The growth of IPTV and broadband helped the service provider offset ongoing declines in its traditional voice service business.
