Telebras, Uruguay's Antel complete work on joint fiber ring

Telebras, Brazil's state-run telco, and Uruguay-based Antel have signed an interconnection agreement for their fiber network in Santana do Livramento, a city near the Uruguayan border.

The buildout of this network node comes on the heels of Telebras' extension of its fiber backbone by 8,900 km to link Brazil's state capitals of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Vitoria.

With this expansion complete, Telebras' backbone network now spans 25,000 km, providing direct or indirect connectivity to 1,300 municipalities that are being served by Brazil's national broadband plan Plano Nacional de Banda Larga (PNBL). As of January 2012, the PNBL was only present in 692 communities.

Antel itself is being no less aggressive with its broadband plans in Uruguay. This year, the telco has plans to invest an additional $140 million on top of the $110 million it has already spent in rolling out its fiber to the home (FTTH) network.

Carolina Cosse, according to a report in TeleGeography, said Antel's FTTH network currently passes around 418,000 households, 111,000 of which are already connected to the network.
