Telefonica gives subscribers free wireline, wireless broadband speed upgrades

Tools

Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? Well, if you're a Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) wireline or wireless subscriber, you're going to get a free bandwidth upgrade.

By the end of 2011, the Spanish-based incumbent operator said it will increase the speeds of its ADSL service from 6 Mbps to 10 Mbps all at no expense to the subscriber. In addition, Telefonica will also double mobile broadband speeds for subscribers that reside in Madrid and Barcelona from 21 Mbps to 42 Mbps.

Telefonica is betting big on mobile broadband. The service provider forecasts that during the 2008-2012 period, the number of mobile broadband subscribers will increase 6-fold and mobile broadband traffic will multiply by 17.
