Telefonica takes 400 Gbps over DWDM test drive

Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) Spain wants to see what the future capabilities hold for multi-Gbps services, and has conducted a test of 400 Gbps over its DWDM network.

Leveraging Ericsson's (Nasdaq: ERIC) MHL 3000 gear, the test was conducted on a 280 km fiber link between Granada and Jaen, Spain. During the trial, Telefonica said it looked at two key issues: the ability to send signals at high speeds on a network that is carrying other customer traffic, and how Telefonica can prepare itself to satisfy growing bandwidth needs.

The service provider reported that results of the trial were "fully satisfactory" because it verified that its current optical could offer this service.

If it sees market demand for 400 Gbps speeds, Telefonica could begin offering such services in 2013.
