Telesp extends Sao Paulo FTTX network reach

Telesp, Telefonica's (NYSE: TEF) Brazil-based subsidiary, plans to step up its Fiber to the X (FTTX) network deployment in Sao Paulo.

To date, Telesp has connected 300,000 homes in 22 neighborhoods across Sao Paulo to its network, but now it plans to expand that number to an additional 10,000 customers by the end of this year. Eligible residential customers can get a triple play package that includes a 60 Mbps broadband data, IPTV and VoIP for $168 a month.

Beyond 2010, the service provider has set some ambitious goals for the FTTX deployment. Already cutting down installation times from eight to four hours, Telesp wants to deliver up to 1 Gbps broadband download speeds in the next three to four years.

In July, Telesp revealed it would spend $519 million this year to enhance its broadband network throughout Brazil, while parent Telefonica in May said it would spend $2.78 billion to conduct upgrades on both its wireline and wireless network throughout 2010.
