TeliaSonera nears FMC launch

Tools

Sweden's TeliaSonera is set to launch a fixed-mobile converged voice service over Unlicensed Mobile Access technology in its home market by the end of this month. It's obviously not the first FMC service in Europe, and not even the first one by TeliaSonera, which already has rolled out a similar service in Denmark.

However, the carrier is pursuing an open model, meaning it will run over any carrier's residential broadband connection; the customer doesn't need to be an existing TeliaSonera customer to buy it. FMC services are still in their commercial infancy, and some haven't performed well, but this move ups the competitive ante for other carriers who are planning at some point to launch such a service.
