Telmex renames its Ecuador wireline unit as Claro

America Movil's (NYSE: AMX) Ecuador wireline unit will soon be known under a new brand as Claro.

Rebranding the unit as Claro is part of a broader strategy taken by Mexican telecom tycoon Carlos Slim across America Movil's units in the region. Right now, America Movil operates under the Claro brand name in 14 Latin American countries.

Although America Movil rebranded its Ecuador wireless subsidiary as Claro, the Claro brand name does not include a merger of the two service providers. Both will continue to operate as independent businesses.
