Telus brings 100G to its intercity network via Fujitsu P-ONP platform

Telus (Toronto: T.TO) has employed Fujitsu as its vendor of choice to implement 100G on its intercity regional networks to meet the ongoing demands from their consumer and business customers.

The service provider will use Fujitsu's 100G solution, the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP).

This deployment will achieve two goals: meet the bandwidth requirements for various wireline and wireless services, and provide a foundation for its packet-centric regional and national network.

Zouheir Mansourati, vice president of Telus Fixed Network Planning & Engineering, said in a release that by "utilizing the FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP for 100G connectivity, TELUS can deliver a high level of service while achieving more efficient regional network utilization, better cost per gigabit of IP traffic, and lower operating cost."

The Fujitsu platform allows Telus to upgrade network capacity on its existing systems to 100G, foregoing the need to deploy a separate overlay network.

Telus' move comes on the heels of increased activity in the 100G market segment. It joins a growing crowd of service providers integrating 100G into their networks including Verizon (NYSE: VZ), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), and smaller competitive providers like DukeNet.

Its 100G deployment is also indicative of what analysts say will be a key driver in the optical market this year.

Following a 10 percent decline in 2012, Andrew Schmitt, principal analyst for optical at Infonetics Research, said in a recent report that the optical networking industry will see growth in three regions: North America, EMEA and China. In North America, the main driver of growth will be an anticipated surge in 100G optical network spending.
