Telus makes $52.3M investment to build FTTP, wireless services in Quebec City area

Telus is making a $52.3 million investment to upgrade its fiber-based wireline broadband services and wireless networks for residential and business customers throughout the Greater Québec City area this year.

On the wireline side, a key focus will be to deploy fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) services to thousands of homes in Saint-Raymond.

This latest FTTP build continues the work Telus began in 2014. During that build, it connected consumer customers in Cap-Santé, Donnacona, Neuville, Pont-Rouge, Saint-Apollinaire and Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures to its fiber network.

Eligible FTTP customers in Saint-Raymond will also be able to get access to a host of new TV content, packages and applications.

While it did not specify the speeds it would offer on the FTTP network, Telus said that service will be available in Saint-Raymond and the Greater Québec City area by the end of 2015.

Besides connecting consumers to the FTTP service, Telus will also extend its fiber services into more business locations. During the past ten years, Telus said it has connected thousands of businesses in Eastern Québec, the North Shore, Saguenay, Abitibi, Québec City, Montréal, Trois-Rivières, Eastern Townships and other nearby communities.

"The first homes and businesses will be able to take advantage of the technology by the end of the year, opening up opportunities to access unprecedented Internet speeds in the home, and creating opportunities for businesses and healthcare facilities to operate more efficiently and adopt new innovations," said Clément Audet, vice-president of Telus consumer marketing in Quebec, in a release.

This latest investment is part of a broader effort the Canadian telco has taken to invest $1.3 billion in Québec through 2018. By the end of 2018, Telus said it will have invested $23 billion in Québec since the year 2000.

Quebec City is just one of several areas where Telus is upgrading its existing wireline network infrastructure. Earlier this month, the service provider revealed that it was moving ahead with its plans to put fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) service into the hands of more users in Alberta, Canada, thanks to a $3.4 billion investment through 2018.
