Telus makes Optik TV portable with wireless gateway

Telus (NYSE: TU) has become the latest service provider to make its IPTV service portable with the introduction of its wireless digital Optik TV box.

Although the new device works same way as the wired Optik digital box, the difference is that the new device receives the TV signal over the air from a wireless access point up to 200 feet away.

Providing support for up to four wireless boxes, the only thing that the user needs is a corded power supply and connection between the TV and digital box.

Current and new Optik TV users have the option to purchase the Optik wireless digital box for $96 or rent it with a term agreement.

Telus is not the only service provider offering a wireless gateway for IPTV service. Both AT&T (NYSE: T) and Bell Canada (NYSE: BCE) introduced similar devices for their U-verse and Fibe TV customers. Like Telus, these telcos also offer customers the option to purchase or rent the wireless gateway.
