Telus' wireline revenues dip, but IP services continue to shine

Tools

Canadian service provider Telus' Q4 09 earnings reflect the common theme that while IP services are on the rise, revenue was again down because of declining traditional voice revenues, while data, IP and wireless revenues were up.

Similar to many of its U.S.-based service provider neighbors like AT&T and Verizon, Telus reported that Q4 09 revenue declined from $2.45 billion to $2.3 billion.

During the last three months of 2009, Telus added 105,000 new subscribers to its fold, a factor it relates to growth in wireless, pay-TV and broadband Internet. The increased adoption of next-gen wireless and wireline services helped to offset decreases the telco saw in traditional wireline voice and legacy data. In 2009, overall customer connections at TELUS increased by 284,000 to 11.96 million.

Subscriber growth during the Q4 saw a series of additions and losses. On the broadband side, Telus added 11,000 new subscribers, down from 19,000 in Q4 08 due to cable operators' winback promotions. One service that did stick out during the fourth quarter was TELUS TV. TELUS added 33,000 new subscribers, a 120 percent increase over Q4 08. Interestingly, increased adoption of TELUS TV drove up data revenues by 4.9 percent to $26 million.
