Time Warner Cable answers Los Angeles' call for Gigabit broadband

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) may be one of the holdouts in the 1 Gbps fiber-based broadband game, but the cable MSO may finally be making its move in Los Angeles by responding to a request for information (RFI) put out by the city for ultra broadband service. Unlike Google Fiber (NASDAQ: GOOG) and AT&T (NYSE: T), which are building out new fiber to the home (FTTH) network infrastructure, Time Warner Cable is going to leverage CableLabs' DOCSIS 3.1 technology to deliver download speeds of up to 10 Gbps over its existing hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) network.
