TiVo files patent suit against AT&T, Verizon
TiVo has launched another legal shot in its ongoing Digital Video Recorder (DVR) patent war. This time, TiVo claims that Verizon and AT&T have infringed on its TV "time-warping" technology. Both Verizon and AT&T's video services incorporate DVRs, and neither AT&T nor Verizon would comment on the lawsuit. Previously, TiVo developed technology arrangements around DVR to with both Comcast and DirecTV to expand its revenue while avoiding litigation.
In a Dow Jones article, TiVo's CEO Tom Rogers said despite attempts to develop agreements with both AT&T and Verizon, nothing ever materialized from those efforts. "We figured we had to stop the irreparable harm," he said.
In addition to its latest suit against AT&T and Verizon, TiVo continues to be embroiled in five-year legal battle with satellite service provides Dish Network and EchoStar.
