Top government communication provider leaders

Sean Buckley, FierceTelecomI'd like to call your attention to FierceTelecom's new Government Communications Leaders feature--a new series recognizing innovators serving the public sector market segment.

For the first installment of this series, we decided to take a look at the five main leaders of the carriers supporting the major government telecom network contracts, including General Service Administration's (GSA) Networx Universal and Networx Enterprise and the Washington Interagency Telecommunications System-3 (WITS-3) contract.

Under Networx Universal, participating service providers AT&T (NYSE: T), Qwest (NYSE: Q) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) have to provide both legacy TDM and next-gen IP services that are currently on the FTS-2001 and Crossover contracts, while Networx Enterprise (Level 3 (Nasdaq: LVLT), Sprint (NYSE: S), AT&T, Qwest and Verizon) is primarily focused on next-gen IP services.

Held by primary contractors Level 3 and Verizon, WITS-3 primarily focuses on providing telecom services to federal agencies in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Regardless of the technologies included in each of the pieces of Networx and WITS-3, one thing you will find as you read each of the profiles on each of the executives we profiled is that what's most exciting is helping an agency carry out their respective daily mission.

Take a look and of course let us know what you think.--Sean
