Tower Cloud adds 25K fiber miles in Augusta, Ga. to accommodate wireless backhaul contract

Tower Cloud is on the network expansion trail again, adding 25,350 fiber miles (or 236 route miles) to its network to satisfy a new backhaul contract with one of the top four wireless operators serving Augusta, Ga., and other nearby cities.

With the addition of this fiber infrastructure, Tower cloud will have a total of 375 fiber route miles in the Augusta area.

Overall, Tower Cloud will expand to over 8,000 route miles of fiber installed and will extend its fiber infrastructure by more than 25 percent, covering hundreds of municipalities from Atlanta to Central Florida. Due to the construction work required to build out this fiber, the provider said the contract will provide jobs, revenue and connectivity for the greater Augusta area including Statesboro, Savannah and Macon.

Like other wholesale providers, small cell has been a growing segment for Tower Cloud. George Townsend, senior VP of business development for Tower Cloud, said in a previous interview with FierceTelecom that it is "getting some small cell awards today and we're beginning to build out some larger-scale projects."

While wireless backhaul is the initial driver, the new fiber network facilities will be used to simultaneously support area businesses through its suite of Ethernet Private Line services. It will make additional connections to regional POP's and data centers, as well as backhaul support and more capacity for wireless towers.

Having this extra fiber on hand means that Tower Cloud could enhance its on-net building reach to deliver Ethernet Private Line and other optical-based services to local businesses and other carriers.

This latest deal in Augusta caps off what has been an active year for Tower Cloud.

In September, the service provider began installing a 1,300 mile dark fiber network in Florida to accommodate a top U.S. wireless operator. Upon completion of that network build, Tower Cloud will have over 6,800 route miles of fiber installed.
