AT&T's no-rehire policy comes under fire

AT&T's policy to not rehire former employees who have retired is now embroiled in controversy. Late last week, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed suit against the telecom giant arguing its no-rehire policy of retired employees discriminates against older workers. At issue is an AT&T initiative in 2006 to not rehire retired AT&T employees.

In the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the EEOC argued: "There is no legitimate business reason or purpose for AT&T's no-rehire policies." The Wall Street Journal reported that the suit was brought against AT&T after the company apparently would not rehire 57-year-old John Yates because of his age, as well as its general unwillingness to rehire other AT&T retirees.
