AT&T's U-Verse hits the spot in the lone star state

Tools

With over 200,000 subscribers and counting in Houston, it's clear that AT&T has been making strident progress with U-Verse IPTV product in its home state.

As one of the first cities to get AT&T's U-Verse service in 2006, the ILEC has continued to expand the availability of the service throughout the Houston region by bringing it to parts of Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris and Montgomery counties. Key to this milestone was the service provider's capex investment in the region. Between the period of 2006 to 2008, AT&T invested about $6 billion in its Texas wireless and wireline networks.

"Today's AT&T U-verse subscriber milestone reflects our commitment to make the investments necessary to bring consumers across the greater Houston area a new era of true video competition," said Don Cain, AT&T Texas president in a release. "We are thrilled to offer this innovative video choice to Houston area customers, and even more excited about the strong customer response we're seeing."

On an overall company basis, IP services were the bright spot in AT&T's Q4 and 2009 earnings reports. By adding 248,000 new subscribers in the fourth quarter, AT&T reached the 2.1 million total IPTV subscriber mark as of the end of 2009. What's more, revenue from AT&T's U-verse TV, broadband and voice tripled during the past year.
