U-verse ups spending, lowers homes goal

Tools

AT&T said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing today it is increasing its investment in its U-verse TV deployment by about $500 million. But, the company also has revised its homes-passed target, saying U-Verse is now expected to pass about 17 million homes by the end of 2008, rather than the previous goal of 18 million.

Part of the additional money to be spent has been marked for U-verse rollout in the former BellSouth territories. Meanwhile, AT&T's pull-back on its goal for homes passed seems strange, given that not long ago, the company said its installation time was quickening. Also, cable TV companies like Comcast may be showing some initial weakening under the new competition. Why slow down now?
