Verizon brings FiOS to upstate New York to challenge Time Warner Cable

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has decided that New York's Capital Region is a great place to take on dominant cable operator Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC-WI) with its FiOS triple play bundle.

Announced last Friday at the Verizon Wireless store on 1770 Central Ave. in Colonie, N.Y., Verizon will be extending its Fiber to the Premises (FTTP)-based service to residential and business customers in the region's Colonie and Scotia villages and the towns of Bethlehem and Guilderland.

In addition, Verizon has secured a video franchise agreement with Schenectady, N.Y., which still needs the state's Public Service Commission approval.

As the new triple play player in town, Verizon is happy to challenge TWC on bundled service pricing.

While TWC's triple play costs $99 a month for new customers, Verizon's similar FiOS offer is $10 cheaper at $89.99 a month. Of course, Verizon's triple play offer comes with conditions. Not only is the bundled rate available for a limited time, but new users have to purchase the FiOS bundle online.
