Verizon CTO: Net neutrality clouds engineering needs

Verizon Communications CTO Richard Lynch, speaking at the Progress and Freedom Foundation's Aspen Summit, told attendees that the over-politicized concept of Net neutrality and paranoic over-reactions about potential traffic delays have clouded the real needs network operators have in engineering their networks to preserve quality of VoIP and other services.

Lynch, speaking in generalities, according to what Verizon told Cnet News after his speech, said that to ensure quality for a VoIP call, network engineers may need to slow down less time-senstive files. However, that delay may be measured in milliseconds, and may be impossible for many Internet users to perceive. Yet, the idea of the possible delay has set off Net neutrality proponents.
