Verizon DSL growth slows

Was Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg being prophetic or just crabby in September when he dismissed the notion that there is such a thing as seasonality in the DSL market? Either way, he may have tempered expectations for future DSL growth, and a report in this week's print issue of Telephony shows that Verizon is indeed seeing its DSL numbers slide.

DSL technology took many years to mature into a leading broadband access services and now its stay may be short-lived for telcos who are increasingly turning to fiber architectures as their lead broadband solution. At least, that's the case at Verizon Communications, for whom the trade-off for an aggressive fiber-to-the-home strategy may be this precipitous dip in DSL growth.
