Verizon's government NOC gets ISO/IEC nod

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) further galvanized its role in serving the public sector as its Cary, N.C.-based Government Enterprise Network Operations Center (GENOC), a center that provides managed services for local, state and federal government customers, earned ISO/IEC 20000-1-compliant certification.

As an international standard set on IT service management, the ISO/IEC 20000-1 certification will support Verizon's GENOC's ability to measure and deliver service quality while aligning with internal requirements such as system consistency, interoperability, and error-reduction. Every three years, Verizon will have UL DQS perform audits on its ISO/IEC 20000-1 certification.

"Because Verizon is one of the largest providers of communications services to government entities at all levels, ISO certification plays an integral role in our business strategy," said Maureen Davis, vice president of global service assurance at Verizon in a release. "Earning ISO certification for our Government Enterprise Network Operating Center means our government customers benefit from the focus on efficiency and effectiveness that standardization provides."

Equipped with diverse cable routing and network redundancy, Verizon's GENOC provides real-time monitoring of network traffic for government customers and serves as a single point of contact for both network and security operations.

Verizon received ISO 20000-1 certification for its Ashburn, Va.-based Government Network Operations and Security Center (GNOSC), which opened in September 2006 for government customers, in 2008. At the time, the GNOSC was built as part of Verizon Federal's preparation for the General Service Administration's award of the Networx Enterprise and Networx Universal telecom service contracts. Verizon, along with AT&T (NYSE: T) and Qwest (NYSE: Q) won a seat on both Networx Enterprise and Networx Universal, while Level 3 (Nasdaq: LVLT) and Sprint (NYSE: S) got a seat on the Networx Enterprise contract.
