Verizon grows California, Massachusetts FiOS footprint to 2.4M homes and businesses

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) may have no immediate plans to enter new markets with FiOS, but in existing markets like California and Massachusetts, the service provider extended the service to a total of 2.4 million homes and businesses in 2013.

In California, the service provider spent more than $514 million to make FiOS service available to over 1.4 million homes and businesses in the southern part of the state.

Supporting the FiOS build was its ongoing buildout of last mile and metro fiber facilities. During the year, the telco laid almost 16,000 miles of fiber cabling throughout California.

Over in Massachusetts, the service provider invested more than $400 million to bring the reach of its FiOS service to over 1 million homes and businesses in 113 cities and towns. During the year, it brought the service to two new communities--Medford and Raynham—to comply with previously set franchise agreements it made.

Similar to California, the service provider expanded its overall backbone fiber network in Massachusetts to a total of 18,000 miles.

The buildout of FiOS in these states also contributed to its ongoing copper-to-fiber transition strategy. According to a press release, the service provider said it has converted over 500,000 customers who had repeat repair calls on their copper-based service to fiber to the premises (FTTP).

In addition to California and Massachusetts, the service provider has made similar progress with FiOS in Connecticut, New York and Virginia.
