Verizon lures new subs with $50 HBO, FiOS broadband bundle

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is appealing to new potential FiOS subscribers with a new $50 video, broadband promotional bundle, but customers will need to be prepared for the price jump when the promotional period ends.

Eligible customers can purchase a package of 50 Mbps FiOS with either HBO or Showtime and traditional video for $50 or $75 for a larger array of video content.

At the end of the 12-month promotional period, the $50 package rises to $73 a month, while the $75 package jumps to $122 after 12 months. Neither of these packages includes the cost of DVR rentals, HD content or other associated fees.

The telco is hardly alone in offering such bundles. Fellow broadband providers AT&T (NYSE: T) and Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) have also introduced a $40 to $50 bundle that includes 18-25 Mbps connections, 20-plus cable channels and HBO.

Targeting new residential U-verse customers, AT&T is offering a $39 bundle with HBO and an 18 Mbps connection. The telco requires a 12-month contract and if that contract is broken, a customer may have to pay a $180 early termination fee.

Likewise, Comcast last October rolled out a low-cost bundle of services that includes HBO, TV Everywhere service, HBO Go, local broadcast channels and broadband access. According to a report in FierceCable, the MSO is charging $39.99 to $49.99 for the "Internet Plus" package, with pricing varying in local markets.
