Verizon may offer $5 landline plan

In the latest "stem-the-bleeding-landlines" tactic, Verizon Communications may begin offering a $5 per month landline calling plan that would allow customers to receive calls, but only dial out to 911 and Verizon customer service. Verizon is also considering a $10 per month plan that would allow some limited local dial-out ability, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Verizon is considering the bargain landline packages in an attempt to slow the loss of wireline revenues as customers "cut the cord" in favor of mobile or VoIP service. Multichannel News also suggests that the ultra-low rates could be an attempt to keep high-speed Internet customers on board, instead of moving to cable triple-play services.

Either way, this latest pricing scheme looks like nothing but a last-ditch effort on Verizon's part.
