Verizon to slow DSL defection with NFL Sunday Ticket

FiOS Fiber to the Premise (FTTP)-based service may be Verizon's broadband future, but since it will be years until it can extend fiber to every subscriber in its nationwide footprint, the ILEC is looking for ways to protect its existing DSL customer base. To entice potential DSL customers that can't be served by FiOS, Verizon is offering new DirecTV bundle service package subscribers a free, one-year  subscription to NFL Sunday Ticket. Of course, there's the obvious catch: A subscriber has to sign up for Verizon's Essentials calling plan, DirecTV's $120 plan with "Plus HD DVR" package, and Verizon's 3 Mbps or 7 Mbps DSL service.

Despite the momentum the ILEC has gained with its FiOS FTTP-based service, Verizon revealed in its second-quarter earnings report that it lost 117,000 DSL customers, up from 46,000 during the first quarter. A call with Wall Street analysts revealed that only 20-25 percent of the 117,000 DSL customers it lost actually upgraded their service to FiOS, while the other subscribers defected to cable.
