Verizon swings layoff axe in New York

Tools

Verizon is keeping its promise that it would hand out another set of pink slips, and one of its first targets in this process is the Long Island area of New York. This follows an announcement made in July that the company would lay off another 8,000 employees this year--a result of declining revenues in its traditional wireline business. Some of the first to go in this process are Long Island-based wireline union workers.

Not surprisingly, these workers aren't happy about it. To make their feelings known, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1108 in Suffolk, NY were on hand to protest the cutting of 126 Long Island employees that were let go this Wednesday. Specifically, 54 employees were cut in Suffolk and 72 in Nassau, New York.

John Bonomo, a Verizon spokesperson, said the ILEC offered either voluntary buyouts or the option to apply for similar jobs in other nearby states.

All of u vcs techs are crying and complaining but none of you showed up to union meetings or kept informed instead u decided to run on the job and kiss management behind. Now your laid off and are still complaining about the union shut up get ur resumes up and get another job.... and yeah I made the scope so I'm still here, but that doesn't mean I'm not next getting laid off but damn stop crying like women and blaming the world for everything and man up n get another job nobody wants to hear ur cries anymore... IN RESPONSE TO THIS L:OOK BELOW

You sound like the same nut that writes on the bathroom stalls... take the buyout and move on ...!

Vcs wouldn't have to cry if the ibew 827 would release us from their union and allow us to form with cwa. No more taking from peter to make paul safer, Ps. BLUMPKIN

i cant understand it, if u get rid of v.c.s. who will do the work ??? :)

i agree the union is weak theres a conflict of intrest between core and vcs. Also once the axe comes down on you eric then you will know how it feels. I know for the remaining vcs techs out there we tried to tell you from the start now you can look back and see we were right.

JOHN MILLER AND THE REST OF THE CREW ARE A JOKE!!!TALK IS CHEAP ITS TIME TO STAND STRONG AND BE AS ONE THEY JUST LET VERIZON DUE AS THEY WISH LIKE PUPPETS ON A STRING.GOOD LUCK TO THE REMAINING VCS TECHS OUT THERE!!!!

not true >>> to give the copper plant back to core would be enough to amend the agreement for the scope of work send vcs back to serving term in and everything else to fac tech.... remember you can't automate the final hands that fix the plant.....Right george?

I WAS A VCS TECH OUT OF THE FORT LEE GARAGE ,NJ THE UNION DID NOTHING FOR US ONE DAY CAME IN AND SAID ABOUT 100 WOULD BE GETTING LET GO BUT YOU GUYS HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, ALL THE WORK IS IN THIS AREA.THE NEXT DAY WAS SORRY THIS GARAGE IS CLOSED AND 2 OTHERS IN HUDSON ,BERGEN!! 198 TECHS IN TOTAL GONE,ALL WE GOT WAS WINDBAG TOM SAYING YOU GUYS DID ONE HELL OF A JOB THANKS IBEW FOR BEING SO WEAK. TILL THIS DAY THERE ARE HIGHLAND TECHS COMMING INTO HUDSON/BERGEN DOING THE WORK AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT ,AGAIN THANK YOU IBEW827

My uncle is legal counsel for vz Nj. He says verizon plans to remove the broadband agreement in NJ. The agreement has already served its purpose for the company by getting the fiber in NJ up and running in NJ but to get rid of the broadband agreement VZ needs to closeVCS. Then the core layoffs will come like gang busters. after the layoffs are complete thw company will reinstate VCS to do all the deregulated work and the remaining core techs will maintain the copper plant.

"now here this move over and get laid off " quote John Miller (Local union)

I still have 30 dollars coming out of every one of my paychecks.. For nothing.

What confuses me, is that the layoffs in 2010 will be due to the 2009 writeoffs that were because of the 2009 layoffs. Isn't this a vicious cycle?

SO WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO VCS TODAY WED THE 27 the local 827 website has removed us i guess being only 300 strong after the broad band move we mean nothing, im sure the international would frown upon this. SOlidarity for none

13,000 today, does anyone know if this number includes the selloff to west virginia?

There is an ongoing proviso that people seem to forget - whenever a 'recession' hits; businesses tend to be the most abusive of the employees they do retain. Happens everytime, just check prior 'recession' headlines (i.e. 1982, 1978, etc.)

Well here we go again, new rumor for 2010 1st quarter is 700 layoffs and 28 management between Pa and NJ, has anyone heard similar? No surprise the union does not know anything, I find it hard to believe that they know nothing when they argeed to the contract with the layoffs language, so I blame the union again for this not the company, the union always goes back to the contract on issues so the company is just doing the same, any more info would be great.

verizon claims it is losing "traditional wireline business" which is true but that is expected when they are building a new fiber network to replace the "traditional wireline business". if the loss of lanline was such a problem then why did they make billions of profits last quater. you have to listen with a third ear.the whole plan was to switch customers from the copper onto fiber, im a cable splicer so i am fully aware. i also know that the company has gone thru a major change and no longer cares about its employees. only the bottom dollar.
