Verizon swings layoff axe in New York

Verizon is keeping its promise that it would hand out another set of pink slips, and one of its first targets in this process is the Long Island area of New York. This follows an announcement made in July that the company would lay off another 8,000 employees this year--a result of declining revenues in its traditional wireline business. Some of the first to go in this process are Long Island-based wireline union workers.

Not surprisingly, these workers aren't happy about it. To make their feelings known, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1108 in Suffolk, NY were on hand to protest the cutting of 126 Long Island employees that were let go this Wednesday. Specifically, 54 employees were cut in Suffolk and 72 in Nassau, New York.

John Bonomo, a Verizon spokesperson, said the ILEC offered either voluntary buyouts or the option to apply for similar jobs in other nearby states.

I heard they can lay off core,if the ncs date 2003 , stated on some union fliers during elections time ,if vcs is not in the area. There is no vcs in south central, Monmouth and Ocean county's , i was wondering if that is true,

I heard that they are going to layoff 20 techs per garage from VCS. Boonton,Ewing,passaic... I assume they have to layoff by seniority, but im wondering wat group was the last group of techs to be hired by verizon? meaning what group is the first to go?

Don't feel bad employees of Verizon and AT&T. Now you see how we customers feel when we get service and see our bills and all the funny business that comes with it. A taste of bad medicine for all!

im sorry to hear about you having just bought a house and your problem i also am trying to sell my house that i cant afford anymore because of getting laid off the union did nothing for us in v.c.s hudson/bergen i really feel sorry for the guys who made scope and just got into core they will be the first to go miller sold them up the river also the guys who stayed in v.c.s. and went to booton have a better chance of getting by this wave but for the scope guys they were set up from the start a real shame stay strong guys

Went from the best job, to building my life with my new family, helped me buy a house and finally had a stable life...To throwing me into a world of stress and worry, i only bought this house with the assumption that we would not get laid off till 2014 if they were going to layoff...What a stressful past 6 months this has been. Living nightmare i'm in right now...Stay strong guys, especially those who have families and are wondering how your gonna make ends meet..

Can someone post a link to the Scope of Work agreement covering Local 827. All I can find on the web are the Ammendment to the agreement that points to original (extending job protection to 2014) and the CWA Scope Agreement.

Nowhere on the IBEW 827 site that I can find is the original document.

Who ever posted that the company will close VCS and then reinstate it! im afraid its not that simple. If the company closed VCS it would lose the VCS contract it worked so hard for! It took the co. almost over a decade to get VCS into the copper facilities. If they close VCS then the contract is Void and they have to start bargaining again. NO WAY that happens! Besides the scope of work only states that in the case of a surplus VCS will reduce workforce 1st then VZNJ. It doesnt say VCS has to Close.

from the best job i ever had to the worst nightmare ever the stress it has put on me and my family is a real shame but it was a real eye opener it all comes down to greed and how to screw over the hard worker all aboard the train has arrived

By the way, the under handed recruitment process has been going on since November 2009.

This is how stupid, clueless and ignorant current IBEW people are! You guys are the ones who are done-in by the Miller regime......

Doesn't matter if you were VCS or Core, the results are still the same. John Miller stuck it in everybodies hiney with no grease. Current Core employees who post their idiotic responses on here; have you taken a look at current job boards? Guess not because you would see that Verizon of NJ is currently circumventing the union contract and collective bargaining unit in place while hiring 2 year term employees. Not one of you assholes has even noticed this because if you did you would have been breathing down IBEW's back. You jerks are getting what you truly deserve in the end. It would be nice if someone would post John Millers home address on here as well along with his home telephone number. IBEW 827; What a useless organization!

The end is near verizon is laying off techs back to 1995 ncs everyone the trains here get on board!!!

could not of said it better 30+ years its time to move over and let guys that want to work and do the job the right way as u once did a chance

That is true but there are alot of "old heads" in CORE with 30+ years that dont wanna retire!! come on!! and all they do is sit around all day and do 1 job a day, while we here in VCS do 5!! Thats not right!!

I've worked VCS for 9 years, primarily because core garages that were offered would have meant a 2-3 hour commute for me. VCS was a great opportunity for me. We did work hard, but contrary to popular opinion, the majority of us were NOT runners! I have been core for 4 years now, and I can honestly say I work harder now than I did in VCS/BACCSI...mostly because of the amount of work involved in installing Fios. I take lots of pride in my work, and don't cut corners. I do my job RIGHT and properly!! I detest anyone saying/calling me a-non-worker ! The sad reality is that VZ doesn't care at all how good you are !! We are all just a # on a timeline that can be cut at any time to feed their greed!

V.C.S. STAND STRONG DONT GO DOWN SO EASY LIKE THE FIRST GROUP GOOD LUCK GUYS

here comes the grim reaper again march 13 this time hope he gets the non-workers (core) leave v.c.s. but miller will sell v.c.s. up the river again whos kidding who ibew could care less about vcs i agree a joke move over and get laid off

DID SOMEONE SAY SURPLUS>>>>>>>>>>>> WHATA way to start weekend

Just so you know, those VCS that were laid off weren't the runners. The Runners of VCS remained because that's the only thing that saved their jobs

john miller is a joke and the rest of them also!!!

OK TO ALL THE VCS TECHS LAID OFF >>>> U ARE LAID THE F OFF U WERE ALL RUnners noone cares about u guys already GOODBYE!!!!!

All of u vcs techs are crying and complaining but none of you showed up to union meetings or kept informed instead u decided to run on the job and kiss management behind. Now your laid off and are still complaining about the union shut up get ur resumes up and get another job.... and yeah I made the scope so I'm still here, but that doesn't mean I'm not next getting laid off but damn stop crying like women and blaming the world for everything and man up n get another job nobody wants to hear ur cries anymore... IN RESPONSE TO THIS L:OOK BELOW

You sound like the same nut that writes on the bathroom stalls... take the buyout and move on ...!

Vcs wouldn't have to cry if the ibew 827 would release us from their union and allow us to form with cwa. No more taking from peter to make paul safer, Ps. BLUMPKIN

i cant understand it, if u get rid of v.c.s. who will do the work ??? :)

i agree the union is weak theres a conflict of intrest between core and vcs. Also once the axe comes down on you eric then you will know how it feels. I know for the remaining vcs techs out there we tried to tell you from the start now you can look back and see we were right.

JOHN MILLER AND THE REST OF THE CREW ARE A JOKE!!!TALK IS CHEAP ITS TIME TO STAND STRONG AND BE AS ONE THEY JUST LET VERIZON DUE AS THEY WISH LIKE PUPPETS ON A STRING.GOOD LUCK TO THE REMAINING VCS TECHS OUT THERE!!!!

not true >>> to give the copper plant back to core would be enough to amend the agreement for the scope of work send vcs back to serving term in and everything else to fac tech.... remember you can't automate the final hands that fix the plant.....Right george?

I WAS A VCS TECH OUT OF THE FORT LEE GARAGE ,NJ THE UNION DID NOTHING FOR US ONE DAY CAME IN AND SAID ABOUT 100 WOULD BE GETTING LET GO BUT YOU GUYS HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, ALL THE WORK IS IN THIS AREA.THE NEXT DAY WAS SORRY THIS GARAGE IS CLOSED AND 2 OTHERS IN HUDSON ,BERGEN!! 198 TECHS IN TOTAL GONE,ALL WE GOT WAS WINDBAG TOM SAYING YOU GUYS DID ONE HELL OF A JOB THANKS IBEW FOR BEING SO WEAK. TILL THIS DAY THERE ARE HIGHLAND TECHS COMMING INTO HUDSON/BERGEN DOING THE WORK AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT ,AGAIN THANK YOU IBEW827

My uncle is legal counsel for vz Nj. He says verizon plans to remove the broadband agreement in NJ. The agreement has already served its purpose for the company by getting the fiber in NJ up and running in NJ but to get rid of the broadband agreement VZ needs to closeVCS. Then the core layoffs will come like gang busters. after the layoffs are complete thw company will reinstate VCS to do all the deregulated work and the remaining core techs will maintain the copper plant.

"now here this move over and get laid off " quote John Miller (Local union)

I still have 30 dollars coming out of every one of my paychecks.. For nothing.

What confuses me, is that the layoffs in 2010 will be due to the 2009 writeoffs that were because of the 2009 layoffs. Isn't this a vicious cycle?

SO WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO VCS TODAY WED THE 27 the local 827 website has removed us i guess being only 300 strong after the broad band move we mean nothing, im sure the international would frown upon this. SOlidarity for none

13,000 today, does anyone know if this number includes the selloff to west virginia?

There is an ongoing proviso that people seem to forget - whenever a 'recession' hits; businesses tend to be the most abusive of the employees they do retain. Happens everytime, just check prior 'recession' headlines (i.e. 1982, 1978, etc.)

Well here we go again, new rumor for 2010 1st quarter is 700 layoffs and 28 management between Pa and NJ, has anyone heard similar? No surprise the union does not know anything, I find it hard to believe that they know nothing when they argeed to the contract with the layoffs language, so I blame the union again for this not the company, the union always goes back to the contract on issues so the company is just doing the same, any more info would be great.

verizon claims it is losing "traditional wireline business" which is true but that is expected when they are building a new fiber network to replace the "traditional wireline business". if the loss of lanline was such a problem then why did they make billions of profits last quater. you have to listen with a third ear.the whole plan was to switch customers from the copper onto fiber, im a cable splicer so i am fully aware. i also know that the company has gone thru a major change and no longer cares about its employees. only the bottom dollar.
