Verizon Wholesale serves up CDN capabilities for ISPs, online retailers

Verizon Wholesale (NYSE: VZ) is addressing service providers and ISPs that need to incorporate multimedia content into their service portfolios with the introduction of its new content delivery network (CDN) solution set.

In partnership with its Digital Media Services brother, the new Verizon EdgeCast Content Delivery Network uses geographically distributed servers designed to enable the quick and efficient loading and distribution of content.

Additional features of the service include route optimization technologies that select the optimal delivery path for client content, whether it be a Web page, online transaction, video, game or software application.

Customers have two service options: a Commerce Solution and the Web Acceleration Solution.

Focused on the online retail market, the Commerce Solution can distribute content and enables quick and secure transactions. One of the key elements of the solution is that it meets the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard requirements.

Set on reducing end-user frustration with slow-loading pages, the Web Acceleration Solution can improve the performance of websites and online applications by accelerating the delivery of content. It offers a series of change-management tools that enable site administrators to modify website settings to boost overall performance.

Offering new services like EdgeCast Content Delivery Network are one way that Verizon could help to turn the revenue tide in the wholesale segment. During the second quarter, global wholesale revenue declined $92 million, or 5.5 percent, year-over-year $1.57 billion.
