Verizon's CFO John Killian to retire at the end of 2010

John Killian, Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) Chief Financial Officer, has decided to retire from the company after a 31-year career with the company.

Killian became Verizon's CFO after Doreen Toben retired in early 2009.

He is the second major Verizon executive in the past year to announce his retirement from the company. Dennis Strigl, Verizon's former COO, retired at the beginning of this year after a 41-year career in the telecom industry.

But don't expect to see Killian, who is retiring to spend more time with his family in New England, popping up at another telecom company.

"If I were leaving to do something else with a competitor, I would be doing it here at Verizon," said Killian, who serves as a director with Consolidated Edison Inc. and a trustee on the boards of Providence College and the National Urban League, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Besides being Verizon's CFO, Killian is probably best known as the President of Verizon Business, a unit that was created out of Verizon's acquisition of the former MCI in 2006.

Although there has been no word on who would replace Killian, Verizon did say they will look internally for the right candidate to take the CFO post.
