Vertical: Business Ethernet services up 43% in '08

Tools

Vertical Systems Group said demand for business Ethernet services went up by 43 percent, when measured in terms of the number of ports.

"Tens of thousands" of new business Ethernet service installs took place in 2008, said Vertical, with deployments most active in the third quarter before many enterprises tightened up by either freezing spending or reducing staff. Installations in the fourth quarter were basically follow-through on network conversions started earlier in the year.

At the end of 2008, AT&T was at the top of the market, while Verizon placed second, followed by TW Telecom, Cox, Qwest Communications, Cogent Communications, Time Warner Cable and Level 3 Communications. Highlights included Qwest passing Cogent's market share in 2008, and Level 3 appearing on the list for the first time with at least a 5 percent market share.
