Virtela appoints B.V. Jagadeesh as CEO, introduces cloud service accelerator

Managed service provider Virtela continues to build its cloud services role by appointing B.V. Jagadeesh--who is probably best known as the founder of one of the original colocation/hosting provider Exodus Communications--as their new President and CEO.

Before landing at Virtela, Jagadeesh served as group vice president and general manager of Citrix Systems' Application Networking Group, which he joined as the result of the company purchasing NetScaler, where he served as president and CEO.

While security remains an issue for many enterprise customers, Jagadeesh believes the migration to cloud services is very similar to the rise of data centers in the late 1990s and the early part of this century.

"We caused a shift in the industry to drive customers who used to host their own applications and in their data center into outsourced Internet mission critical data centers that provided reliability and more telecommunications service providers, power and management of these services and infrastructure," he said. "This created a shift at that time where customers started to feel comfortable to move their mission critical servers into an outsourced service provider like Exodus."

In related news, the managed provider has also introduced a new Cloud Accelerator feature as part of its Enterprise Services Cloud (ESC) platform.

Extending Virtela ESC's acceleration features to applications hosted in the public cloud environment, including Amazon EC2 and IBM Cloudburst, the Cloud Accelerator feature enables enterprise clients to accelerate applications hosted at nearly any public cloud provider.

While most enterprises want to keep their mission critical applications in a private cloud, Jagadeesh said that he's seeing "people are beginning to experiment running other short-term applications in the public cloud and that even the most conservative companies are going to experiment by running these applications in the public cloud."

Jagadeesh added that similar to its ESC product it launched last year, the Cloud Accelerator service will enable customers "who are in the private cloud to get five to 25 X performance even if you are in the public cloud."

As a flexible service option, enterprise customers can deploy it over public or private clouds, data centers, remote offices, as well as hybrid cloud and premise-based solutions.

Like the ESC platform, Virtela's Cloud Accelerator feature incorporates its response time guarantee where Virtela will pay them 250 percent of their service charge if customers do not experience faster response times.
