Vonage taps AOL veteran Redling to head North American consumer services

Vonage (NYSE: VG) has named former AOL and Nutrisystem executive Joe Redling president of consumer services for the U.S. and Canada. Reporting directly to CEO Marc Lefar, Redling will manage Vonage's core business, including its domestic and international long distance calling products and services.

Redling is hardly a stranger to Vonage. He has served on the company's board of directors since 2011, a position from which he resigned when he was tapped for this new role.

Transformation has been a big theme throughout Redling's career.

Redling served as the CEO of weight loss company NutriSystem from May 2008 to November 2012. He also served as chairman of the company's board of directors until April 2012.

During his tenure at NutriSystem, he led three key initiatives: moving the company to a digital platform; expanding the company's product line to engage new customer segments; and launching the company into retail.

Earlier, Redling spent eight years at AOL, holding a number of executive positions including chief marketing officer, president of AOL Access, president of AOL Paid Services and Customer Management; and CEO of AOL International.

One of the big contributions Redling made during his tenure at AOL included migrating its dial-up business, which reached 30 million subscribers, to broadband.

He comes to Vonage at a transformational time for the over-the-top VoIP provider.

Although it has traditionally focused on the consumer market, Vonage recently completed its purchase of Vocalocity, a move that gives it access to the growing small to medium business hosted VoIP market. In addition, it established a VoIP interconnection agreement with Verizon (NYSE: VZ) as part of the telco's IP VoIP interconnection partnership program.
