VT regulators tighten up on FairPoint

Tools

The Vermont Public Service Department (PSD) is cracking the whip on FairPoint. A draft "stabilization plan" created by the regulatory agency calls for the removal of FairPoint executives if the phone company doesn't improve performance on financial and customer service issues by June 1.

PSD's plan also calls for hiring of an independent organization to oversee operations if performance isn't improved.

FairPoint is expected to file a response with Vermont regulators Friday. Since taking over the northern New England wireline assets of Verizon, FairPoint has struggled with converting over email accounts, customer billing, and keeping up with installation orders, with the company's customer service desk overwhelmed by the call volume.
