Windstream brings fixed wireless service to Boston, deepens alternative Ethernet access reach

Windstream has begun offering its fixed wireless service in Boston, providing an alternative last mile method to deliver Ethernet and IP services to the city's businesses.

Leveraging digital microwave technology, Windstream's Fixed Wireless service supports Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) or Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks with Quality of Service (QoS) and delivers scalable bandwidth for speeds up to 1 Gbps, as well as terrestrial diversity.

Joseph Harding, Windstream's enterprise EVP and chief marketing officer, said in a release that the advantages of the service, particularly in areas where Windstream has not built out its own facilities, is that it is a cost-effective alternative to wireline fiber or copper/coax that can be quickly installed yet offers higher speeds and security.

Windstream entered the fixed wireless market when it purchased Chicago-based Business Only Broadband, a deal that added wireless to its mix of service delivery options for its growing business services unit.

Boston is one of five cities where the service provider is delivering fixed wireless-based Ethernet and Internet-over-Ethernet connectivity. In addition to Boston, the fixed wireless service is offered in Chicago, New York City, Northern New Jersey and Milwaukee, Wis.

Although Boston may be the latest city to get the fixed wireless service, according to the telco it won't be the last. When it purchased Business Only Broadband in 2014, it said that it would bring it to a number of markets this year.
