Windstream rolls out SIP trunking product

Tools

Windstream may not be the size of an AT&T or Verizon, but its business customer's desire for IP-based services is driving the tier 2 ILEC to add SIP trunking capabilities to its Dynamic Office VoIP service suite.

With Dynamic Office-SIP, Windstream's business customers can converge their voice, data and high-speed data connections over one connection with the promise of cost-savings that can't be realized over a traditional TDM-based PRI solution. Unlike traditional PRIs, Windstream's SIP trunking allows business customers to exchange voice traffic over an Internet connection versus a physical TDM circuit or PRI.

In addition to reducing the cost of maintaining physical wires and PRI connections, the SIP trunking product allows remote workers to be reached by one number that rings at multiple locations.

Perhaps the one minor drawback with the new service is its initial lack of compatibility with a wide range of PBX manufacturers. While it's likely that future releases of Dynamic Office-SIP will interoperate with other PBX--a feature that will likely make the service palatable to a larger audience of business users--Windstream has only certified interoperability with Avaya's BCM50 release 5.0 (the former Nortel PBX).

Broadvox is always pleased to see another carrier understanding the value of SIP Trunking. In this case, it also useful to see that Windstream has completed interoperability testing with the BCM PBX from Avaya/Nortel. It is probably the only major PBX that we have not tested. However, we have completed IOT with over thirty other IP PBXs, 1st among all other carriers.
