Windstream targets cloud, business services with McLean, Va., data center

Windstream Hosted Solutions (Nasdaq: WIN) on Monday opened a new Mid-Atlantic data center in McLean, Va., enabling it to respond to new cloud and managed services opportunities.

The 65,000 square foot data center, which is equipped with 45,000 square feet of raised floor space, is the latest data center the telco has opened this year to serve its growing enterprise customer base. In April, the service provider opened a data center in Little Rock, Ark.

Any customer that uses the McLean, Va., data center will be able to access their servers, applications and data at any time, something that becomes even more critical as enterprises migrate to a cloud environment.

Those customers who opt to use a cloud service will be able to deploy capacity on-demand without having to spend more capital on network capacity and gear.

Like North Carolina and New York City, McLean, Va., has become another key market of data center growth, and in Windstream's case adds another piece to its growing Mid-Atlantic data center footprint. Its proximity to government agencies, systems integrators and major Internet hubs also makes locating a data center in that market a desirable option.

The telco's movement into the data center and cloud space is part of a broader transformation for the service provider, from a small town ILEC to a larger force in the business services market.

Buoyed by IP, next-generation data and data center services, Windstream's Q3 2012 business service revenues rose 3 percent year-over-year to $906 million.
