Wireless-only homes surpass wireline-only

Read this one carefully: A new study suggests that the number of U.S. households that rely only on cell phone service (14 percent), with no landline, finally has surpassed the number of households that rely only on a landline (12.3 percent), with no cell phone service.

What this really means is that about 14 percent of households have "cut the cord," or that 86 percent still have wireline connections at home. The 14 percent figure isn't terribly surprising. If anything, it's surprising there are any households that have wireline service while not having wireless at all. In any case, telcos have seen the future, and now they must act--by bundling services, running multi-service broadband lines into homes and accepting that wireless-only households won't stay at 14 percent for long.
