Zayo brings fiber network to Albuquerque to target new backhaul and business opportunities

Zayo is taking on the Albuquerque wholesale fiber market, extending its fiber network to the region to fulfill the needs of a wholesale wireless backhaul customer.

For this latest initiative, the service provider will build 158 miles of new fiber cable that it says will stretch from the South Valley to the foot of the Sandia Mountains. It said the fiber build will cover Albuquerque from the suburb of South Valley to Bernalillo, east to Highway 556, and west to Highway 448.

In addition to accommodating this wireless operator's needs, Zayo can use the new fiber to target possible business service opportunities by connecting the network to existing on-net and near-net buildings it has in the Albuquerque metro.

Zayo is not completely a stranger to the Albuquerque market. The service provider already provides services from a single point of presence in Albuquerque to other cities across its national network, but what's different now is that it can offer fiber-based services within the Albuquerque metro area.

Its expansion into Albuquerque is another example of Zayo's ongoing aggressive network expansion strategy leveraging a mix of internal build out efforts and acquisitions. Besides Albuquerque, it enhanced its presence in both the New York City and Washington, D.C. markets, for example, via its acquisitions of AboveNet and FiberGate.
