Zayo to build dark fiber network for London-based SSE Telecoms
Zayo's fiber network construction capabilities continue to resonate with its wholesale service provider customers, and its contract to build a Point of Presence (PoP) network for U.K.-based SSE Telecoms is another proof point of that thesis.
The service provider has designed and will provision SSE's dark fiber backhaul network, which will connect to 21 BT (NYSE: BT) phone and Ethernet exchange points in London and another exchange serving the Slough area. SSE Telecoms' contract with Zayo will support "Project Edge," an initiative to extend its network coverage to all major business districts throughout the United Kingdom.
This buildout will complement SSE Telecoms' plan to deploy its own high capacity PoPs in 54 additional central business districts, serving almost an additional 106,000 business areas with fiber-based connectivity.
What's driving this partnership is time to market.
While SSE Telecoms already operates its own fiber network in London, this new contract will enable it to leverage Zayo's additional fiber reach and fiber design capabilities to offer higher speed services such as Ethernet to a greater number of London-based businesses. Services in the London area will go live in Q2 2014.
Chris Jagusz, managing director of SSE Telecoms, said in a release that Zayo's experience in building dark fiber networks "gave us confidence in their ability to meet both our technical and commercial requirements."
